3 Steps for Creating a Sustainable HR Function: Green Recruitment Trends

It feels good to be green — especially in Human Resources. With the desire to be environmentally conscious and maximize HR effectiveness, green recruitment trends are quickly becoming top-of-mind action items for businesses across the globe.

Over the past 10 years, environmental sustainability trends have cropped up throughout the enterprise, and HR departments are leading the charge. And for good reason.

  • When offered two equal job opportunities in a recent TheLadders survey, 72% of job candidates would choose a more eco-conscious company.
  • In a Jobfox survey, 28% of people would go green if the effort was free, but they wouldn’t take a pay cut.
  • 92% of new college graduates would chose working for an environmentally friendly company, according to a survey by MonsterTRAK.

Liz Pellet, a thought leader in Talent Management, believes this trend is vital in helping companies foster an employment brand to maximize acquisition and retention of talented employees. In the HR.com webinar Creating a Sustainable HR Functionstainable HR Function, Pellet share her three steps for creating an eco-friendly work practice: evaluate, eliminate and illuminate.

1. Evaluate: As the very first step, Pellet suggests performing an in-depth diagnostic of your company’s entire environmental communications as an HR organization. Are your products/services sustainable? Is there a corporate effort to go green? Do your job descriptions reflect your business’ environmental commitment?

2. Eliminate: Redundancy must go, insists Pellet, in favor of streamlined processes to encourage green recruiting, benefits communications and eLearning. Virtual interviewing is one of the first steps to greening HR practices. By using video conference recruiting tools like PGi’s iMeet, a Felix Global Corp. study reveals that 54% of recruiters believe the “Time-to-Fill” rates would decrease. And by opting for a virtual interview, recruiters make their businesses more environmentally sustainable by reducing carbon emissions associated with business travel.

3. Illuminate: Once HR teams have evaluated their businesses and made changes to foster a greener sustainability practice, it is vital that businesses spread the word to gain the full benefits of greening their business: a better environment AND improved HR environment. In the webinar, Pellet said, “Being crystal clear about who you are from a cultural perspective can repel the candidates you know are not a good fit.” By refining your green messaging through recruitment branding and internal employee communications, HR teams can effective drive their business goals through sustainability practices.
